Four types of colleges, four types of prices

What are the four types of colleges?

Private colleges

Average price: ±$43,000 per year

Private schools tend to be the most expensive of the college choices. They get their funding mainly from the tuition paid by their students, and also by donations from their alumni.

Out-of-State public colleges

Average price: $36,000 per year

An out-of-state school is the term used to describe when a student attends a public college or university that is not in their home state.

In-state public colleges

Average price: $20,000 per year

Public colleges and universities (often called state colleges) are funded largely by the taxes paid by the residents of its home state. This helps keep the costs down for students who live in that state or region.

Community colleges

Average price: $3,200 per year

These two-year schools could provide an easier-to-afford launchpad for a 4-year degree, but they do have some limitations. Learn more about them here

You need to cover your college costs for 4 years – at least

The price estimates you see above are just for one year of school. To graduate with a full degree, you’re going to need to cover these costs for 4 years in a row. Or even more if it takes you longer than four years.
