Looking for random scholarships online can be extremely frustrating. But here are several ways to make it clear, easy and fast.
Focus your online searches with the + sign
When you’re looking for scholarships tailored to your abilities and talents, you can save yourself a lot of time by being as specific as you can, and by using the plus sign (+) between the words you put in your online searches.
Example: Scholarships + Music + Brass + Instruments
When you do that, you’re telling the search engine to only bring back results that contain all of the words with a + sign in front of them, not just one or some of them.
Note: If your search results keep coming back with certain words or phrases you don’t want, you can exclude those words by entering them in your searches, but with a minus sign (-) in front of them.
Visit GuideStar.org
There are many nonprofit organizations that offer scholarships, and Guidestar provides a list of them.
Just go to guidestar.org, sign in or create an account and enter “college scholarships” in the search bar.
If you have a special skill or talent, interesting career goal or belong to a particular minority group or heritage, use the + sign to add those descriptions to your search.
Example: College scholarships + nursing + Asian American
